New to Colorado? Avoid this Common Driving Mistake

It’s no secret that Colorado attracts tons of visitors and new residents every year, which is great! However, driving in Colorado can be very different than driving in many of the other states.

Without proper education, I’ve seen visitors make some basic driving mistakes that result in expensive repairs.

For example, a couple of months ago there was a couple from Indiana driving across the country to Moab. They made it 100 miles into the mountains of Colorado when they noticed their car wasn’t driving right, so they turned around and came to our shop.

We were able to quickly figure out that their vehicle had a failing transmission. While talking with the couple, we discovered that they were trying to go 85mph up a 6-grade incline at 10,000ft for over an hour, which destroyed their transmission.

Not only were we prepared to fix their vehicle, but we saw this as an opportunity to educate this couple. Turns out, the owner had no idea that their vehicle had the ability to downshift. We also noticed that their brake pads were nearly metal to metal, because the owner didn’t understand that their 6-speed automatic had the ability to slow itself down on a decline (they were holding the brakes the entire time).

So, not only did we repair their transmission and brake pads, but we were able to educate them so that they didn’t repeat their mistakes and they could drive more safely in Colorado.

Here’s the crazy part – this owner knew about cars! Her dad was a mechanic and taught her a lot about how cars work. However, they were from Indiana, and driving in Colorado is very different than driving in Indiana. So, this was an opportunity to educate her on best driving practices in Colorado.

Even if you know a lot about cars, if you aren’t used to driving in mountains or snow then there is a lot to learn.
